Moving is ruff. With all the steps involved, it can feel a bit chaotic for you and especially your puppy. Moving to a new place, whether across the street or across the country, requires a lot of planning, whether you are doing it yourself or hiring professional movers. It’s important for you to prepare your dog in the process. Here are some tips to help your pup transition:
When you start the moving process, your home will be filled with lots of moving supplies. Before you start packing or bringing in boxes, consider leaving small amounts of supplies in a spare bedroom or in the corner of the living room. This gives your dog time to get help get used to the new materials and create a positive association with them. Play with your pup near the materials and toss treats into the box to let them sniff them out.
When the moving process is underway, consider keeping your dog in the room that they are most comfortable in. This will keep him away from the hustle and bustle of the moving crew and lets him rest comfortably. Turn on a fan or soothing sound to help them be more relaxed and keep a food dish, water, and toys out to alleviate boredom.
Even though the moving process can be busy, don’t get lazy about walks and play times. If your dog normally goes for walks around 5pm, then be sure to go at that time and keep the routine. If they typically have other things in their schedule, like playing games or fetch, keep those in their routine as much as possible. Most importantly, it’s ideal to keep the feeding schedule the same (and in the same location, if possible). For example, if you normally feed your dog dinner in the kitchen at the same time you ate dinner, continue to do that in your current and new home. This is not the time to be trying new dog foods or testing out new collars and harnesses. Keep things as similar as you can.
